TECHNIQUE USED: Crochet


 

SIZES
Small/Medium (Medium/Large)

MATERIALS

Caron International's Simply Soft Quick (100% acrylic; 3 oz/85 g, 50 yds/46 m):

#0019 Blue Mint (MC), 2 (3) skeins

#0016 Black (CC), 1 skein

One US size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook or size to obtain gauge

Yarn needle

Split ring stitch markers

Tassel-making tool (optional)

 

GAUGE

In single crochet, 12 sc = 4"/10cm

 

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch)

Single crochet (sc)

 

Notes:

  • Hat is worked in the round; join each rnd with a slip st to first st (center back of hat).
  • Earflaps are worked down from beginning chain in rows, after Hat is completed.
  • Work Chart using Fair Isle Technique.

 

HAT

Using MC, chain 54 (60); join with a slip st to form a ring, being careful not to twist chain.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around, join (see Note)—54 (60) sc.

Rnds 2 – 5: Ch 1, join CC and begin working from Chart, changing colors as indicated; work Rnds 1 – 4 of Chart, beg each rnd with ch 1, end each rnd by joining with a slip st in first st.

Rnds 6 and 7: Using MC, work even (ch 1, sc in each st around, join).

Rnd 8: Using CC, work even.

Fasten off CC.

Using MC, work even for 10 (12) rnds.

 

Shape Crown

Dec Rnd: Ch 1, dec 9 (10) sts evenly around (* sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around)—45 (50) sc rem. Work 1 rnd even.

Dec Rnd: Ch 1, dec 9 (10) sts evenly around (* sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around)—36 (40) sc rem. Work 1 rnd even. Cont in this manner, dec 9 (10) sts every other rnd by working 1 less st between decreases every rnd, twice more, end with a work even rnd—18 (20) sc remain.

Dec Rnd: Ch 1, [sc2tog] around—9 (10) sc rem. Work 1 rnd even.

Final Rnd: Ch 1, sc 1 (0), (sc2tog) around—5 sc rem.

Fasten off.

EarFlaps

Beg at center Back, place a marker (pm) on beginning chain 6 (8) loops from center Back; skip 12 loops for Earflap placement, pm; skip 18 (20) loops for Front, pm; skip 12 loops for Earflap, pm. Turn Hat so beg chain is facing up; join MC with a slip st at first Earflap marker.

Row 1: Working along opposite side of beginning chain in rem loops, ch 1, sc in each ch to next marker, turn—12 sc.

Rows 2 – 6, 8 and 10: Ch 1, work even (sc in each st across), turn.

Rows 7 and 9 (Dec Row): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—10 sc rem after Row 7; 8 after Row 9.

Row 11: Ch 1, [sc2tog] across—4 sc rem.

Fasten off. Work second Earflap to match first, between remaining markers.

Finishing

Edging: Beg at lower edge of Hat at center Back, join CC with a slip st; ch 1, work 1 row sc evenly around lower edge of Hat and Earflaps. Fasten off.

Ties: Beg at lower edge of earflaps, join MC; work a 20” long chain. Fasten off.

Tassels: Using 3 strands of MC and 3 strands of CC held tog, make three-3” tassels. Attach 1 tassel to end of each tie and to top of Hat.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
