MATERIALS:

Caron International's Simply Soft Quick (100% acrylic; 3 oz/86g, 50 yds/46 m):
2 (2, 3) skeins in #0012 Watermelon (MC)
2 (3, 3) skeins in #0013 Limelight  (A)
1 (2, 3) in #0014 Grape (B)
Size US 13 (9 mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge
Crochet hook size K/10.5 (6.5 mm)
Stitch marker; Pom pom maker or piece of cardboard; tapestry needle

 

GAUGE:
Using US size 13 (9 mm) needles, in Elongated st patt: 9 sts and 16 rows = 4"/ 10 cm

 

STITCHES USED
Chain (ch) - crochet

Elongated Stitch Pattern (multiple 1 st; 6-row repeat)
Row 1: (RS) Knit, wrapping yarn around twice for each st.
Row 2: Knit, dropping extra loops.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: Knit, wrapping yarn around twice for each st.
Row 6: Knit, dropping extra loops.
Repeat Rows 1 – 6 For Elongated st patt.
Stripe Sequence: In Elongated st patt, * work 6 rows using MC, 6 rows using A, 6 rows using B; repeat from * as indicated in instructions.

 

HELPFUL INFORMATION:
Place a marker between 2 center sts on first row.

Note: Poncho is worked in one piece from lower edge to Neck. Cut each color after Row 6 of Elongated st patt, and join new color to work the next 6 Rows.

 

BACK
Using MC, CO 84 (100, 116) sts. (WS) Purl 1 row.
Begin Elongated st patt and Stripe Sequence, and AT SAME TIME, shape center Front and center Back EOR as follows:
All (RS) rows:  K1, k2tog, knit across to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, slip marker, k2tog, knit across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
All (WS) rows: Work even in patt.
Work 28 (34, 40) rows total in Elongated st patt, ending (WS) Row 4—28 (32, 36) sts rem for neck. 
(RS) BO all sts loosely purlwise.

 

FINISHING
Sew center B ack seam, matching colors.
Neck Tie: Using crochet hook and MC (A, B), work a chain 36 (42, 48)" long. Fasten off.
Beginning and ending at center Front, weave tie through sts of neck edge on Row 3 of last color section.
Pom poms: Using Pom pom Maker or piece of cardboard and all 3 colors, make 2 pom poms, 2" in diameter; attach one to each end tie.
Fringe: Using all 3 colors, cut strands 8" long. Holding 1 strand of each color together, fold fringe in half. Using crochet hook, * insert hook from WS to RS into first st at center Back seam, pull through loop [fold of strands], insert ends into loop and pull tight against edge; repeat from *, working into every other stitch along entire lower edge.
Weave in ends.

Care Instructions: Machine Wash: warm water, gentle cycle. Machine Dry: low heat, delicate cycle.
