SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
I-Cord: Using a double pointed needle, cast on, the number of sts indicated in instructions; DO NOT TURN. * Slide sts to the opposite end of the needle and knit them, pulling yarn firmly behind sts; repeat from * to desired length. After a few rows, you will see that you are knitting a tiny tube; give it a gentle tug now and then to adjust any loose sts. Bind off all sts, leaving a 12" tail for finishing.
STITCHES USED
Stockinette stitch (St st): Knit every round.
1 x 1 Rib (multiple of 2 sts)
Round 1: * K1, p1; repeat from * around.
Round 2: Knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts as they face you.
Repeat Round 2 for 1 x 1 rib.
Seed Stitch (multiple of 2 sts + 1)
Round 1: K1, * p1, k1; repeat from * for number of sts indicated.
Round 2: Knit the purl sts and purl the knit sts as they face you.
Repeat Round 2 for Seed st.
Cable (panel of 10 sts)
Rounds 1, 2, 4, and 5: P2, k6, p2.
Round 3: P2, C6F, p2.
Round 6: Repeat Round 1.
Repeat Rounds 1 – 6 for Cable.
NOTE
Change to double pointed needles, as necessary while shaping Beret.
HELPFUL
Place markers between 20-st pattern repeats.
BERET
Using smaller circular needle, loosely cast on 92 sts. Join, being careful not to twist the sts; place a marker (pm) for beginning of round.
Begin 1 x 1 rib; work even until piece measures 1" from beginning.
Change to larger circular needle and St st.
Round 1: Knit 1 round, inc 1 st in every other st—138 sts.
Round 2: Knit, increasing 2 sts evenly around, and AT THE SAME TIME, pm after each group of 20 sts—140 sts; 7 sections of 20 sts each.
Establish Pattern
* Work Round 1 of Seed st across 5 sts; Round 1 of Cable panel across 10 sts; Round 1 of Seed st across 5 sts; repeat from * for each 20-st section around.
Continue as established, repeating Round 2 of Seed st and Rounds 1 – 6 of Cable panel until piece measures 5" from beginning, end with an even numbered round.
Shape Crown
Continuing pattern as established, dec 14 sts (1 each side of each section), every other round as follows:
Round 1: * K2tog, work in pattern to 2 sts before next marker, k2tog, slip marker; repeat from * around—126 sts remain after Round 1.
Round 2: Work even in pattern.
Changing to dpn when too few sts to work comfortably on circular needle, repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until 14 sts remain; 2 sts remain in each section.
Fasten off, leaving a 12" tail.
Thread tail through yarn needle and draw tail through remaining sts; pull snuggly to close top of Beret.
Fasten off securely on WS.
FINISHING
Block Beret to shape and size.
Note: A 10" plate works great for blocking.
I-Cord for Crown
Following instructions for I-Cord, cast on 4 sts.
Work even until piece measures 1 1/2" from beginning.
Fasten off, leaving tail for attaching.
Using yarn needle, weave in ends. Secure I-Cord to top of Crown.
